The environmental conditions provided to the customers using the Vehicle Tunnel are monitored continuously. Our sensors not only record the levels of Carbon Monoxide, the Oxides of Nitrogen and Visibility (the amount of smoke in the Tunnel) - they also control our ventilation fans. We compare the performance achieved in our1960s Tunnel to that which is required for newly built tunnels.

This essential actual performance is reported to the Elected Members of Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority bimonthly. Our performance consistently out performs the legally required standards and more than satisfies our Duty of Care to all service users.
