Tyne Tunnel remains open to traffic on strike dates
Following the announcement that members of the Fire Brigade Union have voted to take industrial action, Tyne Tunnel Management would like to advise members of the public that the Tyne Tunnel will remain open and operational during the strike period. Extra personnel will be on site throughout the strike period and a number of additional measures will be in place:
• All non-essential maintenance at the Tyne Tunnel will be cancelled to minimise any risk of fire
• Vehicle inspections will be stepped up
• Additional fire patrols will be introduced
• The number of escort vehicles for hazardous loads passing through the Tunnel will be doubled from one to two
• During the course of the strike, a manager will be present on site at all times
