Talented young hockey player Loyal Dube, a pupil at West Gate Community College, will be swapping sports on Tuesday, July 9 as she takes part in one of the Newcastle legs of the Queen's Jubilee Baton Relay.
Thousands of community representatives throughout the Commonwealth have been nominated to carry the specially commissioned Baton on its journey to the XVII Commonwealth Games in Manchester which starts on July 25. Loyal is one of twelve community representatives taking part in the Newcastle leg and her commitment and determination to her sport made her an obvious choice for Hockey Development Officer, Julie Fenwick who put forward her nomination. At just 15 years old, Loyal has already played hockey at County level and been selected for a Sport of England Talent Camp which she will attend with other talented youngsters just days after she takes part in the Relay. "Loyal is so interested in her sport and so keen to develop her potential that I thought this would be a lovely way to reward her hard work," said Julie Fenwick. "We are very proud that she has been chosen and the school will be cheering her all the way." Loyal's memorable occasion will begin at 6.15pm on July 9 when she is handed the specially commissioned Queen's Baton on Harehills Avenue, Blakelaw, taking it on its next 200m leg to the roundabout on Ponteland Road, just before Whitethorn Crescent. The Jubilee Baton Relay has been the traditional curtain raiser to the Commonwealth Games since 1958 and this year also marks the Queen's Jubilee Year.
