On this web site you will find teaching resources about the development of the New Tyne Crossing:

The resources on this section of the web site have been developed in collaboration with Tyne Tunnels by teachers and educational consultants from North and South Tyneside.

The project has been coordinated by the Education Business Partnerships in these areas.

The teaching resources will help your students learn about the planning and construction process but also consider the wider issues that are involved.

These resources address the requirements of the National Curriculum, National Literacy and Numeracy strategy and cross curricular areas such as Personal Social, Health and Citizenship Education.

The resources have been particularly designed for:

  • secondary pupils : Key Stage 3
  • primary school pupils: Key Stage 2, particularly Years 5 & 6.

Appropriate resources for other age groups will be developed as the New Tyne Crossing is developed.

You are invited to download and adapt the resources so that they are suitable for your particular students.
A bulletin board has been established on the web site so that information about how the resources have been used and ideas for further development can be exchanged with other schools.

The activities have been prepared so that they could be taught as individual lessons.
The accompanying Teachers’ notes provide the background information which will assist you with your planning and preparation.

The following sections of the web site will enable you to access:

The students will be involved in exploring issues and ideas and interpreting a range of data from various sources.
The Teachers Notes provide the specific references to the areas of the curriculum that will be addressed, but the resources are essentially ‘cross curricular’ with individual subjects being more or less relevant at different stages.
The activities will particularly provide your students with an opportunity to apply their literacy and numeracy skills across the curriculum through a ‘real’ learning context.

Key questions have been used to provide a framework for the students’ investigations. Examples are shown below:
These are applicable to both Key Stages 2 & 3.

Phase 1: Inquiry Phase 2: Planning Phase 3: Construction Phase 4:Impact
Why do we need a new Tyne Tunnel crossing? Where should it be sited? What should the new crossing be made of? What will be the affects of the new construction?
What are the problems of using the Tyne Tunnel vehicle tunnel at present? Who will be involved in planning the new crossing? Who will be involved in building the new crossing?
Why have these occurred? What should the new crossing be like? What effects will the construction have?
What do people think about having a new crossing? What will the new crossing cost?
What difference could a new crossing make?
Key curriculum areas for each phase
