TYNE TUNNELS CHARGES FOR SPECIAL SERVICES WITH EFFECT FROM MARCH 2000

  1. With effect from the 1st March 2000:

    1. Abnormal Loads will only be accepted for transit after appropriate charges are paid, such charges to include toll in cases where the load is unable to pass through a toll booth lane.
    2. Breakdown services, breakdown parking and appropriate toll charge will be paid before vehicles and trailers are removed from the Tunnel site, whether the forty-eight hour parking concession is used or not.
    3. Tunnel users are recommended to avoid inconvenience by carrying sufficient money to meet foreseeable commitments.

  2. ABNORMAL LOADS

  3. Charges will be made, in addition to the appropriate toll, for special Type vehicles passing through the Tunnel, that is for any vehicle whose height, length or width (including load in each case) exceeds the following:-

    Height 4.92 metres (16ft.0”).

    Length 12.2 metres (40ft) or in the case of vehicle and trailers a combined length (including load or loads and drawbar) of 18.75 metres (61.5ft) width 2.55 metres (8ft.4ins).

    The maximum weight accepted for Tunnel Transit shall not exceed standard highway loading in accordance with the Ministry of Transport memorandum No. 771, Type H.B. Loading Clause 4(1). The Tunnel deck is designed for M.O.T. H.A. Loading and checked to take 45 units (180 tons) H.B. Loading.

    A maximum height of 4.92 metres (16.0ft) will be permitted in certain cases and exceptionally large loads are only permitted to pass by special arrangements at night, usually between 02.00 and 04.00hrs. An indemnity is required as per Article 21 of the Motor Vehicles (Authorisation of Special Types) General Order 1969 in these cases.

    Attention is drawn to the “Dangerous Traffic – List of Restrictions” applied under the Tyne Tunnels Bylaws; copies are available £5.00 postage and packing included.

    Tunnel gradients are 1 in 20; there is a 7.3 metre (24ft) wide carriageway and a curve of 128 metres (420ft) centreline radius.

    Speed limited of 15 m.p.h. (24km.p.h.) min. and 30 m.p.h. (48km.p.h.) max.

    Charges in respect of escort services rendered and arrangements made to enable the special type vehicle to pass through the Tunnel, having regard to height, width, length and time passage are as follows:-

    Day Passage between:

    09.30 hrs and 11.30 hrs

    13.15 hrs and 14.15 hrs

    19.00 hrs and 22.00 hrs

    Width up to 2.9 metres (9’6”) Fee £6.00 plus appropriate toll.

    Wider than 2.9 metres (9’6”) Fee £30.00 plus appropriate toll.

    Night Passage between:

    22.00hrs and 05.30hrs

    Width up to 2.9 metres (9’6") Fee £3.00 plus appropriate toll.

    Wider than 2.9 metres (9’6”) Fee £15.00 plus appropriate toll.

    1. On the understanding that Abnormal Loads must be prepared to wait if other traffic is heavy.
    2. Where load exceeds width AND length – higher charge will apply.

  4. BREAKDOWN SERVICES AND BREAKDOWN PARKING

    1. Breakdown Services

      Charges for removal of vehicles from the Tunnel are as follows:-

      1. Motorcycle (with or without side car, Power assisted cycle or invalid carriage £5.00 (flat rate)

      2. All vehicles at the rate of £28.00 per hour minimum charge £14.00

      3. Additional recovery charge on all £16.00 per hour. minimum charge £8.00

    2. Emergency and Breakdown Parking

    Parking charges for vehicles and trailers which are not removed from the Tunnel within 48 hours:-

    £2.00 per day, or part day, following the above free parking period.

    Before leaving a vehicle unattended at the Tyne Tunnel for any reason, Drivers are required to report to a uniformed officer of the Tyne Tunnel.

  5. CHARGE FOR NON-PAYMENT OF TOLL

  6. With reference to section 1 (iii), if no cash, cheque or credit card available, an invoice may be issued for toll due, Charge £3.00. This being to cover Administration Costs etc. (subject to verifiable identification of owner and driver).

    The Passenger Transport Authority will not accept responsibility for loss, whilst vehicles, trailers or their contents are parked at the Tunnel.

    Vehicles may be clamped or removed to a secure compound after 48 hours.

    Any vehicles left on Tyne Tunnels property are liable to be searched.
