Welcome to our fifth EMAS statement for the financial year 2007/08. This statement explains the history of the TT2 Ltd (Tyne Tunnels), gives an explanation of EMAS and reports on our environmental performance for 2007/08. This statement can be read alongside our previous four EMAS statements which are available on the “In This Section” area on the right of this page. In 2003, with the growing magnitudes of global environmental concerns, we at the TT2 Ltd (Tyne Tunnels) decided to implement and improve our environmental performance via the ISO 14001 management system and EMAS registration. Registration to ISO14001 and EMAS were both achieved in 2004 and this has provided a framework to assist our workforce to carryout their duties in the most environmentally friendly efficient manner. We see EMAS and the use of ISO 14001 as our environmental management system as an opportunity to take forward our continual improvement plans and realise them. EMAS and ISO 14001 in 2006/07 has helped aid our continual improvement plans with a further reduction of waste going to landfill, more waste recycled, a reduction in Tyne Tunnel fuel usage and improvements in air quality within the vehicle tunnel. Overall our environmental performance has continued to improve for the fifth year running, these improvements have been independently verified by an accredited EMAS verifier. We have been successful in the EMAS Awards 2008 and have again won the UK Medium Category. The criteria for the awards for 2008 was based on “Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions/Energy Consumption/Energy Efficiency”. Our submission will now be scrutinised by a jury of 5 experts. We will find out in November 2008 if we have won the European award.
